Santa Cruz Trek + Climbing Pisco & Chopicalqui – 12 Days
Day 1: Huaraz – Cashapampa – Llamacorral (3800m/12464ft)
After the breakfast in the hotel we will take our private bus to the Callejón de Huaylas on the north side of Huaraz. We will travel through the districts of: Carhuas (2650m/8692ft), Yungay (2500m/8200ft), and Caraz City (2400m/7872ft). We will arrive around 10:00AM to our destination, Cashapampa. Our donkey driver will waiting for us to transport our camping equipment, and therefore make our backpacks very light. From the trailhead we will hike for 2.5 hours and then break for lunch. Another 5 – 6 hours of hiking will get us to our first camp the, Llamacorral (3800m/12464ft), around 4:00pm.
Day 2: Llamacorral – Alpamayo view point – Taullipampa (4200m/13776ft)
This day will be a full day hiking and breathtaking vistas. After the breakfast we will begin the two-hour hike that will take us to Ichiccocha Lake and Jatuncocha Lake. From here we continue for another two hours that takes us to the base camp of Alpamayo. From this vista we can see the mountains Alpamayo, Quitaraju, Artesonraju, Paron, and Aguja. Try to resist maxing your camera’s memory card at this location because there is much more to come. Two more hours of hiking will bring us to our second camp site, Taullipampa (4200m/13776ft).
Day 3: Taullipampa – Punta Union Pass (4750m/15580ft) – Cachinapampa
After breakfast we will start hiking at 8:00am. A four-hour hike will bring us to the Punta Union Pass (4750m/15580ft) where we will have lunch while enjoying the splendid scenery. Complete panorama views of glaciated mountains, blue skies, and unique landscapes will be our companion during this high altitude picnic. After lunch we descend for approximately three to four hours to our final camp, Cachinapampa (3800m/12464ft).
Day 4: Cachinapampa – Vaqueria – Paccharuri (3900m/12792ft)
After breakfast we will descend for about 2 1/2 hours to Vaqueria. From here we begin the gradual ascent through unique Quenual Tress where one can see many different animals such as the condor of the Cordillera Blanca. Three hours of hiking will bring us to our campsite, Paccharuri (3900m/12792ft). This camp reveals a great view of Mt. Chopicalqui.
Day 5: Paccharuri – Portachuelo Pass (4770m/15645ft) – Cebollapampa (3900m/12792ft)
After breakfast we will start at 9:00am. Portachuelo Pass (4770m/15646ft) is our lunch time destination and normally takes about three hours to hike. From this pass you are rewarded with views deep in the heart of the Andies. Few people in the world have seen what your eyes will behold from this vista. North and South Huascaran, Huandoys, Pisco, and Chacraraju are a few of the peaks you will see. From here we descend for two hours to our next camp, Cebollapampa (3900m/12792ft).
Day 6: Cebollapampa – Pisco Base Camp – Moraine Camp (4850m/15908ft)
After the breakfast in Cebollapampa we will start climbing up to the Base camp for about 3 hours and half, arriving there we will have lunch around 12:30hours. Arriving to the Base Camp we will enjoy the nice views of different peaks around like Huandoys, Chacraraju, Pisco and Chopicalqui, we will prepare our equipments to carry till Moraine camp, around 13:00hours we will going up to the Moraine for about 3 more hours over the rocky paths; we will have dinner early afternoon, overnight camping at (4850m/15908ft).
Day 7: Moraine Camp – climb up Pisco (5750m/18860ft) – Back to Base Camp
After the breakfast in the Moraine Camp at 4:00am approximately we will start climbing up for about 1 hour to get the glacier, here we’ll have to put our climbing equipment to start climbing up to the Pisco Summit (5750m/18860ft), after climbing up for about 1 hour we’ll get a quite all of 40mtrs and 50 ° of difficult, after this all we have to climbing for about 2 hours half to get the Summit, where we’ll enjoy the nice views of different mountains such as: Artesonraju, Alpamayo, Caraz, Huascaran, Chopicalqui, Yanapaccha, Chacraraju, Brogui, Huandoys, etc and a splendid turquoise lake of name (69 lake), after few minutes we’ll start go down to the Moraine Camp, when the porters will be waiting for us already with our equipments to continue go down to the base Camp, arriving to the Base Camp around 4:00pm approximately, overnight Camping at (4400m/14432ft).
Day 8: Base Camp – Cebollapampa – hike to the Base Camp of Chopicalqui
After the last breakfast in the base camp of the Pisco, we will descend to Cebollapampa, from there will ascend to the Base Camp of Chopicalqui for about 3 more hours, possible lunch at the Camp, during the hike we will enjoy nice views like Chacraraju, Pisco, Huandoys and Huascaran peaks, overnight at (4200m/13776ft).
Day 9: Base Camp – Moraine Camp (4700m/15416ft)
After the breakfast in the Base Camp we will hike up to the Moraine Camp for about 4 hours, during this hike we will enjoy the splendid view in the north site like Pisco, Huandoys and Chacraraju peaks, lunch along the way, after arrive to the camp in the afternnon we will check our climbing equipments for the next day, dinner and overnight Camping at (4700m/15416ft).
Day 10: Moraine Camp – Camp 1 of Chopicalqui (5500m/18040ft)
After the breakfast we will climb up for about 40 minutes over the rocky paths to get the glacier, where we will put our climbing gears to start climbing for about 3 hours to the Camp 1, where we will enjoy the splendid views of nice peaks like Chacraraju, Huandos, etc, overnight over the glacier at (5500m/18040ft).
Day 11: Camp 1 – Chopicalqui summit – Moraine Camp (4700m/15416ft)
This day will be a little hard to climb, we will leave at 3:00am in the morning after breakfast, climbing for about 4 to 5 hours will get the summit (6534m/21431ft), then after enjoy the views for few minutes will come back to the Camp 1, where the cook will be waiting with hot water to drink, then we will continue go down to Moraine Camp for about 2 hours more, arriving around 4:00pm, Overnight Camping at (4700m/15416ft).
Day 12: Moraine Camp – Base Camp – Huaraz
After the last breakfast in the Moraine Camp of Chopicalqui, we will descend to the Base Camp for about 1 hour half, continue go down to the highway called Curva de Chopicalqui, where our transfer will be waiting for us, from here to Yungay will take 2 hours, along this travel we will pass the Llanganuco lake and then we will arrive the of Huascaran National Park Control, where we will registering whit our passport, then we will continue go down to Yungay, after this we will continue traveling along the Callejon de Huaylas to Huaraz for about 1 hour more. Arriving to Huaraz around 17:00hours approximately. Transfer to the Hotel.
